Environmental Cosmology: Principles and Theory of Natal Astrology by Kenneth McRitchie
Written in response to the need for a “theory of astrology,” Canadian technical writer Kenneth McRitchie develops an axiomatic approach that should be of special interest to the student of astrology, the critic, and the observer of new ideas. In light of the consistent replications and extensions by other scientists of astrological experiments begun by French researcher Michel Gauquelin in the mid-twentieth century, this book is a conscientious attempt to find a common ground that can realign the dialog between science and astrology.
McRitchie starts off by examining the skeptics’ view of astrology. He argues that some of the well known criticisms of astrology can be rejected because they deny other sciences as much as they deny astrology. Many of the criticisms reveal various misperceptions of astrology, which suggest a need for better astrological education. The bulk of this book attempts to simplify, organize, and clarify astrological concepts for the consumption of thoughtful modern readers.
Recent findings in statistics, psychology, and chaos science are used in this book to shed light on some of the traditions of astrology. McRitchie unfolds meanings from several of astrology’s ancient, folksy axioms, and from these he defines a set of practical principles to use as guides to the theories he puts forth. Like many concepts in science, astrological concepts appear to be counterintuitive but have rational consequences. Astrology, we learn, is not so much the study of things (planets, stars, or even persons) as it is the study of how “intelligence” is related to natural environmental symmetries. Thus the individual is native to intelligence and not the other way around.
By drawing direct comparisons between the astrological environments that pertain to types of values, skills, love, and beliefs, and strikingly similar models of personality within the modern social sciences, Environmental Cosmology attempts to serve the following functions:
– Provide a clear and useful cross-disciplinary guide to personality analysis.
– Highlight very specific areas of attainable empirical research in astrology.
– Explain the astrological mechanisms of projection, development, and maturity.
