For over four thousand years, ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, and Greek astronomers tracked time in ten-day cycles aligned with 36 bright stars rising on the eastern horizon at dawn. Each decan marked a distinct quality of time — a named star, a specific theme, a particular energy for work and reflection.
The week was invented. Decans were observed.
What Is a Decan?
A decan is a 10-day period aligned with a bright star and an archetypal theme. Thirty-six decans of ten days each equals 360 days — add the five epagomenal days “outside time” and you have a complete 365-day year. Every decan has a ruling star you can find in the night sky, an archetypal theme to guide your focus, and a built-in three-phase rhythm:
- Initiate (Days 1–3): Plant seeds, set intentions, begin
- Flow (Days 4–7): Build momentum, do the work, test ideas
- Reflect (Days 8–10): Integrate, close loops, harvest insights
Ten days is the Goldilocks length for human development — long enough for a pattern to emerge and complete, short enough to maintain urgency and focus. It is exactly the right pace to read one meaningful book, run one real experiment, or establish one new habit.
