Maharishi Bhrigu was the first compiler of predictive astrology. He compiled about 500,000 horoscopes and recorded the life details and events of various persons. This formed a database for further research and study. This study culminated in the birth of the science (Śāstra) of determining the quality of time (Horā) and is the Bṛhat Parāśara Horāśāstra. These Horoscopes were based upon the planetary positions of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Rāhu (North Node of the Moon) and Ketu (South Node of the Moon). After that, Maharishi Bhṛigu gave his predictions on different types of horoscopes compiled by him with the help of Lord Gaṇeśa in a brief and concise manner. The total permutations/possible horoscope charts that can be drawn with this is about 45 million. Maharishi taught this art of predictions to his son (Śukra) and other pupils. Currently a part of Bhrigu samhita is available in Hoshiarpur/Sultanpur district of current Indian Punjab state and Varanasi district of current Indian uttar Pradesh state. Many people have found their horoscope in this part of world.

Bhrigu Sutram is the English translation of the book Bhrigu Sutram said to have been written by Maharishi Bhrigu himself. It is a forgotten but a very valuable ancient classic of Hindu Predictive astrology in which are described effects of the various planets in the twelve houses of the horoscope, in a very simple, direct, lucid, logical and meaningful manner. The learned author of these small but very useful work has delineated the effects of the planets in the various houses in accordance with their significations and keeping in view the astrological nature, characteristics and functions of the planets, the aspects they receive, their conjunctions with benefic or malefic planets and the fact whether they occupy their house of debilitation or exaltation, their own or enemy house and how the lord of the house under examination is disposed. The book gives very valuable hints on how to find the character of a native, his moral inclination, his fortunes and misfortunes in various walk of life. It also provides useful indications with regards to longevity and prosperity of the native, his parents, brothers and children.

Bhrigu is one of the founders of Hindu Astrology. Except Pitamaha, Kasyapa and Narada, Bhrigu preceded all Hindu Astrologers. Parasara, Jaimini and Garga belonged to last part of Satya Yuga or early part of Treta Yuga. Even by the most conservative estimate he belonged to 5000-6000 B.C. Bhrigu preceded Sri Rama. Bhrigu’s son Parasuram was a contemporary of Sri Rama. Pitamaha had the seuperiority in mathematical astrology. Kasyapa and Narada had superiority in mundane astrology. But credit goes to Bhrigu to lay down a strong foundation of Hindu Hora Sastra. There have been four well-known schools of Hindu Astrology namely, Parasara School, Jaimini School, Yavana School and Jain School. But even more ancient has been Bhrigu School of Astrology. We have reasons to believe that Bhrigu Sutram is the compilation of original works of Sage Bhrigu. Sage Bhrigu on Predictive Astrology is quite a useful book. Many of the rules have been found to be amazingly true. There are many surprising things in Bhrigu which cannot be found elsewhere and yet they are amazingly true.

About the Author

Shri DS Mathur has been a member of the Indian Administrative Service since 1971. He has held important assignments in the state of Madhya Pradesh and Government of India during his career spanning almost four decades. He has retired from the Indian Administrative Service in 2007.

He has been a keen student of astrology since the last three decades and has written extensively on it. His four books, namely, Predictive Astrology-An Insight, How to Time an Event, Vedic Progression, and How to Read a Birth Chart have already come out. This is the first volume of the fifth book. It meets the long felt need of readers of astrology adequately.
