Brihaj Jatakam बृहज्जातकम् of Varāhamihira (Hindi) by Suresh Chandra Mishra

Brihat Jataka or Brihat Jatakam or Brihajjatakam (Sanskrit: बृहज्जातकम्), is one of the five principal texts written by Varāhamihira, the other four being Panchasiddhantika, Brihat Samhita, Laghu Jataka and Yogayatra. It is also one of the five major treatises on Hindu predictive astrology, the other four being Saravali of Kalyanavarma, Sarvartha Chintamani of Venkatesh, Jataka Parijata of Vaidyanatha and Phaladeepika of Mantreswara. The study of this classic text makes one grasp the fundamentals of astrology.

The work covers the wide and complex range of predictive astrology. The brevity employed in its composition is noteworthy. In an article titled “On the Authenticity of the (Modern) Brhat Parasara Hora Sastra” published in the July and August 2009 issues of The Astrological Magazine, Bengaluru, the Vedic astrologer Shyamasundaradasa writes that

one was not considered a scholar of jyotish unless he had memorized Brihat Jataka and Prasna Marga not Brhat Parasara Hora Sastra. Brihat Jataka was considered to be a jewel among astrological literature and indeed in my early days of study there were many translations and commentaries on Varahamihira’s Brhat Jataka….In South India Brihat Jataka (and its commentaries) is held in the highest esteem,not BPHS. Why? Because of its many ancient commentaries by Bhattotpala and others especially the Dasadhyayi of Talakkulathur Govindam Bhattathiri .

Brihat Jataka is considered as the standard textbook on Vedic astrology, and sometimes described as “India’s foremost astrological text”.

The English translation of Varahamihira’s Brihat Jataka, the standard text book on astrology, is a monumental work in completing which the difficulties in translating a beautiful, technical and suggestive work in Sanskrit had to surmounted by hard labour, profound research and want of adequate expressions. Brihat Jataka is a great classic of Vedic astrology composed by The Great Varahamihira, who was the famous astrologer in the court of The Great king Vikramaditya in the year 57BC. He was also a great astronomer and the first one to mention in his work Pancha Siddhantika, based on our ancient Siddhantas, that the ayanamsa, or the shifting of the equinox is 50.32 seconds. He also authored the famous Brihat Samhita, Laghu Jataka and Yogayatra. His other famous classic is Daivagya Vallabha, which deals with prashna or horary astrology. Brihat Jataka of Acharya Varahamihira – An Immortal Source Book of Hindu Predictive Astrology (Classic) by P S Sastri

Brihat Jataka has over 407 Shlokas. The first in this book explains the technical terms and concepts. The second explains the characteristics, positions, relations, metals, qualities, places and natures of the planets. The third chapter deals with the births of birds, animals, insects and trees. This deserves an elaborate treatment and long research. The fourth chapter dealing with Nisheka refers to women’s conception, and other factors. Peculiarities of birth and Balarishta are taken up in the next two chapters. The seventh and eighth chapters explain Amsa and Pinda Ayurdayas. These have greater validity than the popularly used dasa systems in determining longevity. The ninth gives a brief account of Ashtakavarga. The tenth is about Profession. The results of the conjunctions of planets are explained in chapter 14th. The next one is about Renunciation. Influences of the constellations, lunar effects in the different signs, results of planets in various signs, effects of the planetary aspects, and effects of the planets in various Bhavas (houses) are dealt with in the next five chapters. Some special combinations are given in the twenty first chapters. Miscellaneous items are taken up in the next chapter. The 23rd chapter deals with misfortune. 24th Chapters is about Female Horoscopy which finds elaborate treatment in Saravali. The 25th chapter is about death. How to erect lost or unknown horoscopes is given a fairly good treatment in chapter 26. The 27th is about Decanates. The last one numerates the contents of the text. Brihat Jataka is a classic and one who does not master this text can never grasp the fundamentals of the science of Astrology. There are many translations of this text, and we have tried to offer a useful and valuable commentary.
